What Shrink Wraps Better – Heat Gun or Hair Dryer?

December 31, 2008 | Filed Under Products/Supplies | 4 Comments

When asked in my gift basket classes, “Does a hair dryer work as good on shrink wrap as a heat gun?” now I know how to respond because of this video experiment comparing the two items. I was surprised by the results, but perhaps you won’t be. See it for yourself.

Why Shrink Wrap Instead of Cellophane Wrap?

When I began making gift baskets in 1990, I chose cellophane wrap for all of my designs because I wasn’t ready to invest in shrink wrapping equipment.

Today, it’s important to be ready to apply all types of wrapping materials around completed designs, as customers will request different styles. You’ll also require different wraps according to the themes you make.

Shipping requirements dictate that shrink wrap is added around most, if not all, gift baskets, to protect it during travel. Some designers also add cellophane outside of the shrink wrap to provide a soft appearance around the inside protection.

If you use a hair dryer to shrink wrap, how effective is this technique for you, and how realistic is the above video compared to your results?

Hi Shirley, I loved your video on the shrink wrap: heat guns verses hair dryers. Always knew the dryer was a hoax :) Anyway I live in a two bedroom townhouse, and I would like some advise on how or where to store my products for my gift basket business; coming sometime this month or early next year. I appreciate and value your advice, look forward to hearing from you soon. Thanks.

    Hi Karen,

Glad the video was beneficial for you. I still hear, from some designers, that the particular hair dryer they use works for them.

One other tool that is high on the shrink wrapping list is the paint remover gun, available at most home renovation stores.

  3. In regards to the hair dryer issue, I think that it really depends on the hair dryer. I remember reading somewhere about using a 1700 watt heat gun for shrinking wrap on baskets. Several years ago, because of the length of time it took to dry my thick hair, I bought an 1875 watt hair dryer. If I give it a short time to get hot (not more than a minute), my hair dryer works very effectively on the shrink bags that we use.

    Hi Liesl,

I agree that effective shrink wrapping depends on the tool’s efficiency.

I’ve heard from several designers who trust their dryer tool. The dryer used in the video belongs to my daughter, who’s very pleased with its intended use.

My heat gun is the only product I’ve ever used, and as you see in the video, will continue to be my dryer of choice.
